If Cardiff were to be included as one of the English ‘Core Cities’, it would be ranked third in the UK Competitiveness Index, significantly outperforming cities such as Nottingham, Birmingham, Sheffield and Liverpool.

Fact 5

Between 2002 and 2007 the number of jobs in Cardiff rose by around 10%, compared with figures of 8% and 4% for Wales and GB respectively. Jobs growth in Cardiff over this period has also exceeded that of all the UK’s Core Cities.

Fact 4

Cardiff has experienced the fastest rate of private sector employment growth of any of the major cities in Britain, based upon Annual Business Inquiry data.

Cardiff contributes over 15% of the total economic output of Wales, despite accounting for around 10% of the total population.

Fact 2

325,000 people live in Cardiff, and the city has a much younger population profile than found throughout Wales. 66% of the city’s population is of working age, compared with an all Wales figure of 60%.

Cardiff has experienced spectacular economic growth over the last 10 years and was recently ranked 4th for growth potential in the UK [Experian, 2007]. Cardiff now boasts one of the fastest growing economies in the UK and the highest growth in private sector employment over the last 10 years of all UK Core Cities.

The first meeting of the Partnership

The first meeting of the Partnership took place on 23 November 2009 following the call for a strong “business voice” for Cardiff identified by recent PricewaterhouseCoopers research.
